Space Airlock for Models

Source

The idea

Enable labs to grant granular, controlled model access for external evaluation, alignment, interpretability, and red-teaming without exposing weights or intellectual property.

Why this is interesting

  • An access service must make a useful research task possible while keeping the laboratory’s boundary intelligible. The right level of access depends on that task, not on a single universal interface.
  • The request does not prove that restricted access preserves every evaluation’s validity. Research utility and protection of the model need to be tested together.

Possible starting points

01

Task-specific research access

Pilot one authorised evaluation with documented inputs, permitted outputs and reviewer responsibilities.

02

Revocation and provenance trail

Use synthetic activity to test whether the lab can trace an access grant, change it and verify that revocation took effect.

Questions to answer

  1. Does the access restriction invalidate the research question the evaluator is trying to answer?
  2. Who decides when more access is justified, and can that decision be audited?
