Integrated premium cacao brands

Source

The idea

Combining farmer sourcing, fermentation and consumer retail; Manam example.

Why this is interesting

  • Controlling sourcing, fermentation and retail lets a brand stand behind its quality and origin claims, but it also means carrying farming, processing and consumer retail risk inside one company.
  • Omnivore describes this through a company in its own portfolio, in a fund newsletter. That shows one team is attempting the approach. It does not show that the market is open or that customers are underserved, and the newsletter’s traction claims were not independently checked.

Possible starting points

01

Post-harvest processing as a service

Offer fermentation or drying to growers of one speciality crop who currently sell raw produce.

02

Origin records for small food brands

Help a small brand keep farm, processing and batch records so its origin claims can be checked.

Questions to answer

  1. Is full integration necessary for quality, or could a narrower business supply several brands?
  2. Which Indian speciality crops have enough grower density and consumer pull for a similar approach?
