The idea

Startups focused on high-quality production and IP-driven, value-added manufacturing.

Why this is interesting

  • IP-led manufacturing can capture more value than contract production, but it also requires technical differentiation, customer qualification and disciplined capital deployment.
  • A venture thesis describes where an investor sees possibility. It does not by itself identify a narrow buyer, an entry wedge or evidence of demand.

Possible starting points

01

One defensible component

Own design and process knowledge for a component with concentrated customer pain and repeat demand.

02

Contract R&D to product

Use paid development work to discover repeatable needs, then standardize the strongest solution into owned IP.

Questions to answer

  1. What evidence shows customers value the IP rather than only lower-cost production?
  2. How much capital is required before technical and commercial risk are reduced?
